Branden's Music Stats

I love listening to music. I also love statistics. So I created this website, which quantifies exactly how much I love music.

These statistics are compiled from a database of 15,416 tracks from 1,899 albums and 807 artists (not counting artists whose sole contribution to my library is on compilation albums). The total playtime of the music library is 6w 6d 18h 37m 42s, or an average of 4m 33s per track. A total of 451,120 plays are recorded, for a total time spent listening of:

The comparison is based on the past 50w 6d of tracking only. In that time, 38,867 plays were recorded, for 17w 4d 8h 32m 43s of playtime. In the "All Time" statistics, the number in parenthesis is the change in rank over the duration of this comparins.

Collection of these playcount statistics began at least by February 2006, but may have begun prior to then. The data is collected from my iTunes Library, which counts a "play" as when a track plays through its complete end. I do not leave my music playing unattended, and I primarily listen to music through iTunes or devices which synchronize with its library. I take great care to keep this data as clean as possible. These statistics were last updated on 1 Sep 2023.

Favorite Artists

Artist favoritism is based purely on total time spent listening to music by that artist, irrespective of playcounts.

Favorite Albums

Albums are ranked by their hypotenuse of total playcount and total time spent listening to the album.

Favorite Tracks

Individual track favoritism is determined purely by playcount.

Music by Genre

Understand that the "genre" of music is completely subjective and not clearly defineable. Many times music falls into multiple possible genres, or different albums by one musician are in different genres, or sometimes even tracks on an album. Futher, a genre-defining artist for one person may be known only peripherally to another fan of similar types of music. Genre labels also change alongside trends and fads, and can have significant overlap within one another. So, that said, these are the genres I use to categorize the music I listen to, with the goal being to group similar musicians. In my library, every artist has one and only one genre applied to all music they've released. I also try to standardize on a small number of labels, with some "catch-all" genres used to facilitate this.
